Are Any Cruise Lines USA Owned?
Are any cruise lines USA owned? Yes. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, 98 percent of the industry is U.S.-owned. These cruise companies employ more than 200,000 people throughout the world. There are no other cruise companies that are entirely American, although Norwegian and Carnival are the only exceptions. All of their crew and passengers must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. But this doesn’t mean that they aren’t responsible for paying taxes to their home country.
Of course, the answer depends on the type of cruise line. There are international cruise lines that are owned by a large corporation. They’re not affiliated with other brands, such as Disney. Independent cruise lines include the Disney Cruise Line, Silversea Cruises, and MSC Cruises. But even if the line is American, it’s still a foreign company, which could pose a problem if a traveler wants to stay in a U.S. port of call.

While Norwegian is owned by Norwegian, it is registered in the Bahamas. Norwegian is owned by a U.S. company, but the Norwegian Encore, which is named after Norway, is registered in the Bahamas. This is a classic example of the two seemingly conflicting origins of cruise lines. This further complicates matters, given the current controversy regarding how taxed these companies are. Meanwhile, the Norwegian Encore was used to offload guests and crew during an outbreak of COVID-19, which could have potentially been prevented if the company was US-owned.
